Three Little Birds have made headlines in the past for the politically driven messages in their music. You’ll get a chance to take in their eclectic mixed-bag of musical influences, which range from country to reggae, when they take the stage at the Rideau Centre on Sunday at noon.
Thanks to Three Little Birds for taking the time to answer a few questions for us.
How would you describe your sound?
We pull upon a wide range of musical styles - everything from Balkan styled harmonies within reggae beats to country-flavoured melodies amidst Tin-Pan Era arrangements - and incorporate them into our folk-sy acoustic instrumentation. Our lyrics follow in the topical folk song tradition of Phil Ochs and Buffy Sainte Marie.
How long have you been playing music, and how has your sound evolved over that time?
Three Little Birds has been playing music together just over three years now. Our debut album showcases all of our writing styles, which are both lyrically and musically quite diverse. In keeping with the socially critical spirit of Three Little Birds, the topics of our newer material reflect contemporary issues (such as a song dedicated to the Indigenous Idle No More movement), and in this regard we are always evolving. Also (and keep this on the DL, because this is top secret info!! ), rumour has is that we will be introducing an accordion into the band in the very near future …
What are you hoping to get out of your Bluesfest performance?
Playing festivals is always a good way to get our name out there. We love playing to new audiences and meet new people! We’re thoroughly enjoying this year’s line-up and are happy to be presenting at such a renowned festival.
Are there any other bands on the bill you’re excited to see?
We are really looking forward to seeing Björk. She is a powerful artist whose voice is 100% her own. We’re sure she’s going to put on a spectacular and unforgettable show!
